No subject returns more often in Tan Peng Hooi's work than the dove. Across at least nine numbered canvases he paints pairs and gatherings of doves by rocks, water and morning light. The Malay title is always simply Merpati; the English always carries the word peace. In the Chinese tradition he inherits, the dove is an auspicious subject, and in his hands it becomes a quiet argument: that peace is something ordinary life depends on and deserves.
