Fishing villages and the sea

The sea is one of the two great registers of Tan's art. Fishermen working difficult water, boats drawn up on the sand, stilt houses over the tide, the mending of nets and the weighing of the catch. His 2005 curator read these as portraits of poverty and fortitude rather than scenery, and the paintings hold to that reading: labour observed at close hand along a Penang shoreline that was already changing as he worked.
